Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under home confinement.
The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending court reviews.
Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the action to imprison the elderly politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.
This included trying to remove his ankle monitor and a invitation to a public vigil that could enable a potential flight.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a filing authorising the arrest, the judge said information from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the tracking monitor to ensure success in his getaway".
This, it said, would be "facilitated by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his offspring.
His child, his son Flávio, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I urge you to battle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the restoration of democratic rule in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's decision was the potential of Bolsonaro's transfer to embassies near the dwelling, considering that the inquiries revealed a background of arranging to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a declaration said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the United States embassy in the federal district, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from the former president's residence.
International Reactions
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, causing him to implement a fifty percent tax on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being held in a Federal Police station in Brazil's capital city and will have a custody hearing on the next day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Supreme Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also petitioned that the former president be permitted to exit his dwelling for medical care, saying he demanded regular treatment for lung conditions and other illnesses.
Context of Sentencing
He was determined responsible of leading a plot aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the presidential race to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the support of the armed forces officials. The current president was sworn in without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a week later, on January 8th, many his followers invaded and destroyed government buildings in the federal district, Brasília.
The police intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.
The magistrates found that the protesters had been incited by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the trial a "witch hunt and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
