The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans imposed by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as the French president accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This row risks becoming a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
