Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Might Solve This

Each time a prominent awards ceremony nears, one notices an outcry for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist for pushing forward since similar to blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these classifications actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.

Different situation exists for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Think about these this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
  • A different innovative game received no nominations that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, however the design of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles in the world and have been for many years.

The iconic tile-matching title competes with popular creative games competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, while interacting with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — actually, with challenge, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting generations.
